Job-hunting as a foreigner

People, no matter how different, tend to have the same concerns when they're thinking about making the crazy jump from home to abroad. Among what I'd rank the top five concerns is finding a job.

I tend to think finding a job is a pretty trying task even when you're in your home country - throw in living in a foreign one, and feeling like a complete noob, and it takes on a whole new level of crazy. There's nothing quite like walking up to a counter, CV in hand, trying to make a good impression but really just despairing of the process entirely. But despair not! Getting a job is all about you. If you don't have the motivation, persistence, and confidence, it's not going to happen. So all you have to do is be your amazing self (dressed smartly, of course) and win people over. Being foreign is a talking point - I almost always start conversations off with something about California. One of my English friends joked the other day that you can always fall back on the weather when you're looking for something to talk about, and seriously, if you compare English summer with mine, there's endless room for conversation!

There are plenty of websites that claim dedication to helping you find a job. I've found, though, that the best site to hit up is UEA's own Employability website. You can find local paid jobs, on-campus jobs, or even just volunteer work. The Career Center even has a CV builder to help students write up their CV's - a very useful tool, considering that as an international student, the structure I'd use for my resume is a bit different than that of your typical UK CV. Pretty much, the uni really is here to help sort you out when it comes to finding a job. And let's be honest, any help with the application process is help much appreciated!
