Marshall Scholars' Concert

Yesterday, UEA was privileged to host three visiting artists from London. Marshall Scholars are American postgraduates sponsored by the British government for study in the United Kingdom. They are selected for their leadership, scholarship, and ambassadorial potential. "As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success."

Guitarist Michael Poll, violinist Madalyn Parnas, and poet Garrett Turner visited Norwich and gave a free public concert in the University of East Anglia's Blue Bar.
Michael, Mady, and Garrett are friends of Becca Farnum, American International Student Ambassador and a Marshall Scholar pursuing her MSc in Water Security and International Development here at UEA.

Michael Poll has been called “bewitching” by 34th Street Magazine, and “splendidly clean and focused, but always lyrical…superb!” by Jay Reise, President of Orchestra 2001. A classical guitarist, he has toured in North America, South America, and Europe, and has received funding as both a 2010 Fulbright and a 2012 Marshall Scholar. He holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznan, and currently studies at London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama. His first album is due to be released this summer.

At 22,violinist Madalyn Parnas has performed fifty times as soloist with orchestra, concertized with Peter Serkin, and earned enthusiastic reviews in the New York Times. With her sister Cicely, as duo parnas, she earned 1st prize in international competition at Carnegie Hall. The duo records on the Sheffield Lab label. Presently, Madalyn, a 2012 Marshall Scholar, is pursuing her Masters at London’s Royal Academy of Music, having earned an Artist Diploma while studying with Jaime Laredo at IU Jacobs School of Music. Ms. Parnas completed her bachelors at The College of Saint Rose, graduating summa cum laude in Music Industry and French.

A proud native of Florence, Alabama, Garrett Turner graduated from Emory University with a double major in Music and Creative Writing. He is currently pursuing an MA in Theatre and Performance at Queen Mary, University of London on a Marshall Scholarship. Garrett wears many hats, including singer, actor, dancer, poet, playwright and academician. In his free time he enjoys playing basketball and learning about people’s lives.
