Faith at University -UEA Interfaith Day!
Hi everyone!
In light of the recent and first ever Interfaith Day that took place on campus about a week ago (20th February), I thought I should do a quick post on faith at university/UEA. This is a big part of many people's lives and I beleive it's not talked about enough (hence the first Interfaith Day).
I think the Interfaith day was an amazing event because it promoted dialogue between the faith and belief societies on campus and the idea of religious tolerance in general. I helped with the UEA Christian Union stand in the Hive and got to meet and interact with so many amazing people!Over 70 people turned up to the event and the day culminated in a big discussion/forum at the Julian Buidling.
Being an international student at university can be a a difficult time adjusting, and fitting in. Some have an easier time being away from home, while others may feel a little isolated a lot of the time. It's important to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally and also spiritually. If you've grown up in a faith, or have a faith, sometimes part of the isolation may be being disconnected from a community of beleivers. Personally, getting plugged into both a Church and the Christian Union has dramatically
transformed and enriched my university experience. You get to have people who understand you and your beliefs, care about you and provide a nice change of scene outside from the university and campus environment. It's great to have older people here in Norwich that can provide some golden nuggets of wisdom from time to time and discuss life's bigger questions!
A great way to start is join the campus society of your faith. There are several for each faith; for instance, the Christian societies include the Christian Union, Quest, and Signature Ministries. Some great churches (with convenient evening services) include Proclaimers (my church :)) , Holy Trinity and St Thomas. The UEA Multifaith Centre is also an important place to go to meet other people of your faith, or find out whats happening on campus regarding it. The various faith socities are the Hindu Society(NHSF), Sikh society and the Islamic Soceity (I got to meet many of them at the Interfaith day, and they are all amazing!). You can find all the rest at the UEA Union website : http://ueastudent.hcoms.co.uk/socweb2/details/14 .
So, if faith is a big question for you in deciding where to go to uni, do your research on the area. UEA made great provision for this, and there are may places across norwich to go to practice your faith. If you're already at uni and just havent heard of anything to do with your faith yet- joining a society is a great place to start :)
