Recipe: Torrijas
Hello everybody!
As Easter break is slowly creeping up on us (just over a week to go!), I thought I would write another themed blog entry--a recipe this time!
Last year I explained how we celebrate Easter in Spain (it's actually called Semana Santa or Holy Week, and you can find that blog post here). Now, I'm showing you a very easy recipe that is typical of these dates--torrijas! This dessert consists of a loaf of bread soaked in milk (or sometimes wine), with honey and spices which is soaked in egg and then pan-fried! Easy peasy and so delicious!
You will need:
- 4-6 thick slices of stale/day-old white bread e.g. sourdough (the harder the bread is, the better this recipe will work: it will be crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Very recent bread can make it turn out a bit too mushy, so try toasting it beforehand!)
- 3/4 cup Milk
- 1-2 Eggs
- Vegetable Oil (we usually use olive oil in Spain)
- Sugar and Cinnamon
- Honey
1) Cut four slices of bread (2cm thick). Lay them in a deep tray, cover with milk and leave to soak for two hours.
2) Pour the beaten eggs into a shallow dish. Heat a 2cm depth of oil in a deep frying pan.
3) Dip both sides of each bread slice in the egg to coat. Fry in the hot oil for 4-5 minutes until crisp and golden brown.
4) Mix the sugar and cinnamon together on a plate.
5) Remove the torrijas from the oil, drain on kitchen paper and then roll in the cinnamon-flavoured sugar. Add some honey to top it off!
And there you have it! I'm very much looking forward to eating many of these over the holidays!
Have a great week and good luck with the last deadlines!
