An Introduction to Southern Africa: Swaziland

King: King Mswati III

Prime Minister:
Barnabas Sibusiso Dlamini

Swaziland is located  slightly North of South Africa, with all its borders surrounded by the country except for a small part bordering Mozambique to the North East.

  • Swaziland has a population of 1.2 million people with 93 males for every 100 females.

  • Approximately 83% of the population identifies as Christian. Other non-Christian religions in the country include Islam, Bahai Faith, and Hinduism.  However, the vast majority still practice indigenous beliefs on top of these other religious practices.

  • SiSwati and English are the official languages although English is used extensively in government and business. SiSwati is used every day by the majority of the population.

  • Political parties were banned in the 1978 Constitution, but parties still exist.  Swaziland is one of the last remaining pure monarchs where the King is the head of the state and he appoints the Prime Minister and some officials, with other members of government being democratically elected.
