UEA nurses are having a ball

Two nursing students from the University of East Anglia have organised a ball to raise funds for vital medical and educational supplies for a hospital in Africa.

Second year students Debbie Delbridge, 29, and Beth Blake, 19, will be visiting Malawi for two weeks at the end of August as part of their studies.

They will be working at the Ekwendeni Mission Hospital, based in the north of the country which serves a community of 45,000. They will also be visiting a local orphanage that cares for children with physical and learning disabilities.

The trip will give the UEA students a valuable insight into the varied ways of delivering health care in a developing country while learning alongside their Malawian counterparts.

Debbie Delbridge, who is studying children’s nursing said “I'm extremely excited about the trip and hope that the experience will enhance my learning. It will also be a great opportunity to discover how different cultures deal with health problems.”

“Being a single parent to three daughters means this trip has taken a lot of planning and organising but it truly is an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Beth Blake, a learning disabilities nurse said: “I am looking forward to working at the hospital in Malawi. Friends I know who have been there say it's a life changing experience and a real eye-opener. I know when we return I will appreciate the health care we have here.”
