Learn about Geological Science at UEA!
Last week I made a new friend at a social event at UEA and found out she is doing a degree in Geological Science at UEA. I seized the opportunity to learn a little bit more about her studies and she happily gave me a short description of her course and I thought sharing this information to new prospective students as well students already at UEA.
Over the year, the geology department at UEA has organised a wide range of career focused events, like trips to geological career’s fairs and taking one day per year off timetable in order to allow employers to come in and talk about their company and also a chance for students to do a bit of networking.
While chatting to my friend, the question of what geology undergraduates actually study and what they do with geology was our main discussion. And my friend gave me a list of a few things that can be done with geology that you might or might not know about and interestingly there are some wquite interesting ones that we normally do not pay too much attention to as non-geological audience.
- Oil exploration
- Waste management
- Building and construction
- Natural hazards and hazard mapping
- Global strata correlation
- Water sourcing
- Quarrying
- Mineral exploration
- Volcanoes and earthquakes
- Mapping
- Planetary geology and the search for extra-terrestrial life
- Bridge and tunnel construction
- Carbon emission mitigation
- Climate change
And many, many more…. If you want details on how geology links with any of the above topics feel free to leave a comment below or visit the UEA website for Geological Science Course in the school of Environment here on UEA Geological Science, School of Environment!:)
