PARENTS FAQs about UEA/ Norwich

It’s approaching the end of the academic year and students at the university are preparing for their exams, offer holders are beginning to make their final decisions on study for the coming September. Some of you reading this blog may have smashed the public exam and having a graduation trip with your friends or doing a bit more research about your university. The ambassadors working for the International Office have been making calls to applicants over the past few weeks, trying to solve the enquiries you have. I have concluded some of the questions below that are often asked by parents that I hope you all find it useful when it comes to making a choice that could affect your future!

Weather in Norwich:
  • ·         Typical UK weather
  • ·         It was about 60C last week, but 2X0C for this week (early May)






























Discrimination:
  • ·         Not really
  • ·         Every staff at UEA are friendly
  • ·         Show your willingness to communicate with others!
  • ·         There are more than 200 clubs & societies on campus – you can know a lot of local friends~


Number of Hong Kong students at UEA:
  • ·         Around 100 HK students are admitted to UEA every year
  • ·         You can know more friends by joining the orientation camp organised by the HK Society
  • ·         You will find relatively more HK students doing INTO courses, business, economics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medicine


Living costs:
  • ·         Depends on your living style
  • ·         Chinese takeaway: £8-15 per meal
  • ·         Lunch/ Dinner at university (INTO Kitchen/ Campus Kitchen): Less than £8 per meal normally
  • ·         We have Buy 1 get 1 free offer for Domino’s & Pizza Hut
  • ·         Do you drink a lot?


What you need to do now with your conditional offer:
  • ·         Check if you have applied for the International Scholarship – 25%/50% tuition fee reduction per year!!!!!!
  • ·         Apply for UEA Accommodation – make sure you are comfortable with your choice
  • ·         Contact your country ambassador if you have any questions or need any help
  • ·         Accept your offer before the deadline
  • ·         Prepare yourself – how are you going to make the most out of the 3 years at university


Part-time jobs
  • ·         Lots of opportunities available on the UEA Career Central website
  • ·         You can apply for the jobs after getting used to how the system works after the induction session

Accommodation choices
  • Do you want to have your own toilet?
Ă˜  If YES: Norfolk/ Suffolk Terrace are NOT your choice
  • ·         Party animals?
Ă˜  It may be unavoidable to have parties in the kitchen
Ă˜  But Norfolk/ Suffolk Terrace are noisier
  • ·         Your budget? (Ranking from high to low)
Ă˜  Premier accommodation: Hicking/Barton House
Ă˜  Standard En-suite
Ă˜  Two bedroom units (not recommended for first year students)
Ă˜  Norfolk/Suffolk Terrace (cheapest)
  • ·         Kitchen and toilet will be cleaned once a week for all UEA accommodation
