Oh the weather outside is frightful! - Tips on staying warm

Oh the weather outside is frightful!

Tis the time of the year when we Singaporeans in UEA complain the most because of the cold English weather...
Leaving our sunny island to this winter wonderland does get hard sometimes but here are some friendly tips to help you students get through the winter period :)

  1. Invest in thick bathrobes and  bedroom slippers
Waking up in the morning to the cold is painful and sets you shivering immediately, so place the bathrobe and slippers next to your bed and get warm and toasty the first thing in the morning! Primark sells these items at a really affordable rate, so the next time you are in town pick up some robes and slippers!

2. Invest in a fleece blanket

Having a thick duvet closest to your skin when sleeping keeps you warm but a fleece blanket or a thin blanket on the top prevents convective heat loss. That way you have a restful sleep at night.

3. Try a hot water bottle!

Not only do girls use hot water bottles to help them with their monthly situation but also for winter time. Try placing a hot water bottle at your feet and then slowly bringing it up your body to warm yourself up, especially for those cold and rainy winter nights!

4. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Having a hearty and warm breakfast in the morning really helps! Try making soups the night before so you warm them up in the morning for a ready to go breakfast. Another cheap and easy breakfast food is oatmeal (or porridge as they call it here).

5. Stay in the library!

The UEA library is 24/7 and guess what, IT'S WARM! So even if your house is freezing and your housemates want to scrimp on heater cost, you can just pack all your study material and head to the library! The shop does hot food as well so you never go hungry :)

6. The very obvious

Of course by now many of you would have invested in thick scarves, hand gloves and coats! Another useful item to invest in would be hand warmers. They immediately heat up with a click and sets you hands all warm in your pockets, perfect for when you're strolling down admiring the lights and enjoying this season that never happens in your country

I hope these tips were useful for most of you and that you enjoy this Christmas season!
