the movie review of the Oscar documentary nominate--the tears of sichuan province
Having heard there was a Popular Science Education movie on earthquake by american director and producer, but at this year's Oscar Academy Award ceremony, i failed to see that movie in the live telecast. having been through great length to find that movie and watching it , i was shocked. while not much to surprise, the reason why chinese telecasting of the ceremony covers up that movie is because that movie becomes sort of a social documentary, rather than a Popular Science Education film. it, in some sense, reveals the truth that the chinese gov did not and does not want to concede.
the movie started with dozens of parents whose children were dead from the collapes of the school building in the earthquake in 2008 of sichuan province, china, while the building around still standing up, which was definitely worth investigation. however, the local governor procrastinated or rejected the appeals in the first place, the irritated parents decided to parade to the provincial capital--chengdu, to redress the injustices, while during their parade, the local mayer and even the police use all possible ways to prohibite them from going to chengdu, there are even clashes and conflicts. finally the government agreed to investigate and fetch the experts form chengdu. afterwards, the expert, apparently, were hiding something, and there is no any report till now. the whole thing end up with solutions under the table such as compasation about 8800 $ for each dead child, if the parents keep protesting, they will be accused of subversion of the political power, which can be 10 years in jail.
the wikipedia has the introduction of the current chinese government: it tends to hide and cover-up scandles when they first happened, and only when the situatuion compels they feel obliged to admit the truth, otherwise they will balckout the whole story all along till it is safe to publish the truth, when the whole staff in the government has retired or died. that is the way that chinese gov dealing with the scandles in its government.
