From Tetley to Twinnings: A Guide to Norwich Tea Rooms

Without a doubt, one of my favourite things about living in the UK in general is the tea rooms.  As a Canadian, the idea of a tea room was pretty foreign to me when I first moved here.  Sure, we have a David's Tea on every corner back in the Motherland, but no real tea rooms.  What's a tea room? It's basically a little café that serves little sandwiches, cakes, scones, and any type of tea you could imagine.  Also, I don't know why I found this so important, but instead of a single mug of whatever tea you choose, they bring you a full pot, with a cute little tea cup.  Based on description, which really doesn't do them justice, it just sounds like a normal café.  But trust me, its so much more than that.
Instead of trying to explain it to you, I thought that I would just map out a guide to some of my favourite tea rooms around Norwich so that you can see for yourself (whether literally or virtually).

Biddy's Tea Room
Biddy's seems to be one of the most popular tea rooms in the city.  Everyone always talks about it, and though I've lived here for about five months, I had never actually been there until a few days ago.
Biddy's is a vintage inspired tea room that has lounges with overstuffed leather couches, an afternoon tea room upstairs, and a wall in the from of the shop lined with endless tins of tea.
It's not very expensive, I got a pot of tea with a cheese scone and it was about £5.
But if you are planning on checking it out I would recommend checking when it's busy first, because it usually seems to be. But!You can book a table in advance if you want to be sure of a seat.            Picture from wordmusing.wordpress.com

The Tea House
This was the first tea room that I went to when I moved to Norwich.  One of my British friends could not believe that I had never been to one before, so this was where we went.
It was an adorable introduction.  The shop itself is actually hidden down a side street in one of my favourite areas called Elm Hill.  It's quite a small place, but that is one of the things that I like most about it.  Also, it's decorated with lots of lace and old photographs, just what you would expect to find in a British tea room.  The prices here are really great, so if you are more budget conscious (aren't all students?) than this is a great place to go.

The Assembly House
If you are looking for a really posh afternoon tea, this is the place to go.  Before I even knew what it was, the Assembly House was somewhere that I wanted to go.  I always see it on the bus into town, and it really looks like the perfect English Regency building.  Obviously this tea is going to be on the more expensive side, but if you are willing to spend the money then you should definitely check this place off your list.

Okay, so I know this isn't a full list of tea rooms in Norwich, but that would be a much longer post.  Anyway, I hope if you live in Norwich you can get out to try some of these places, or if you are somewhere else in the would this at least gives you a taste you the tea in the city.

Let me know if you have any suggestions to add to the list!
