Chinese New Year is approaching !

Image
Chinese New Year also know as the Chinese Lunar New Year is the most important traditional Chinese festival. Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries with signigicant Chinese populations, such as Hong kong, Macaus, Malaysia or even in UK. Although Chinese New Year is not an offical holiday, many studetns like me celebrate Chinese New Year with friends here ! We usually have a so-called 'reunion dinner' on New Year's Eve where all the members of the maily, near or far, get together for the celebration. My favourite food from the Chinese New Year is Nian Gao (it is like a Chinese New Year sticky rice pudding) of course. Its pronunciation is a homeophone for a more prosperous year. While my favourite activity in CNY is getting red packets (with real money inside of course) from married couples or the elderly. Usually they pass out red packets only to unmarried juniors. To get the red packets from couples, we need to say New Year Greeting and a married person would not...

The Streets and the Ziggurats

Image
During my first semester at UEA, I attended a memorable concert with The Streets at the LCR. Having bought tickets to see him for a second time on campus this February, I was quite surprised when I discovered the cover art for his fifth and final album (being released just over a week from now). Not only is my time at UEA marked by a Streets concert at the beginning and the end of it (this being my final year), but the cover of ‘ Computers & Blues ‘ , features Norfolk Terrace! Norfolk Terrace is, along with Constable Terrace, design by Sir Denys Lasdun, and a grade II listed building . Together with other buildings on campus, the Ziggurats have won UEA over 20 awards for its architecture.  The feel of the campus, consisting of glass and concrete combined with large green areas, is one of the many things I appreciate about this university. Therefore, I enjoy discovering others, like The Streets, who share my enthusiasm. And I have seen it before. Last February, footage of t...

UEA, The Home away from Home.

Most people are very possessive of their culture, and as international students, find it hard leaving that culture behind. Fears of not having similar people around, not having access to new music and not being able to gain access to the foods loved so much. Some people enjoy having their native foods wherever in the world they find themselves. Some even go through the trouble of travelling with these items. The worst, is actually finding oneself in a place where you can't have access to all these things. However, it isn't like that at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. It might rather be a challenge identifying a particular food that you can't find in the city. Or a challenge to find no one who shares the same culture as yourself. Not only is the University big on diversity , but regardless of the suburban nature of the city, so is Norwich. At least for West Africans, I can confidently say that you'll definitely feel like you're at a home away from home. When...

A Place of Wonderful Treasures: Home!!

Image
Hello everyone!  Its the 2nd week of the 2nd Semester! Its time to tell stories! =D During the X'mas holidays, I went back home to Brunei i.e. Home to celebrate Christmas and New Year. It was short one month holiday but it was definitely worth it despite the long flight hours and of course the unforgettable Jet-lag sessions! I was lucky enough on the day I left Heathrow. It was the start of one of the worst ever snowstorm to occur in the UK in history. My flight was delayed for about an hour and it few off just hours before the snowstorm hit London! But nevertheless, I was glad I made it home! Brunei is a place, not much on shopping but more on its food, culture and environment. Sight-seeing is a must in Brunei and exploring the wonders of its aborigines people is most definitely interesting. Brunei is located on an island that looks like a chicken on the map, called Borneo Island. It is situated in between two East Malaysian states, Sabah and Sarawak, and above Kalimantan,...

Trip to Helsinki and Lapland (Continue)

Image
Santa Village ! We didn't have enough time in the Santa Village as there were too many people awaiting to see Mr. Santa and we spent too much time on the queue!!  The Santa Village is really cold and beautiful, you can see the sparkling Cedars. Yet the thing is that Santa Village is becoming more and more commerical, they got  many stores selling souvenirs. Plus the photo taken with Santa is really expensive.     A massive number of mails from worldwide to Santa! and some souvenirs from Santa Village.   P.S. At the end of the trip, we went back to Helsinki for a bit and then catch our flight back to London. Very unluckily, the original plan was going back Reading at one-ish in the morning (actually Reading is only half hour away from London) , but the delay of flight, delay of connecting the flight to the airport, plus the delay of train and all kinf of stuff make me go back at 6am !  Super Duper Tire Trip! Preseting UEA during my holiday time in Indonesia

Image
Hi everyone, How was your holiday? I guess it must be so much fun! Some of you may choose to travel, see new place, some stay in Norwich or around Norwich. I chose to come back to my home country, Indonesia and stayed with my mom, dad, and my dogs. It was a nice period of time where I could meet my friends, my old bed, and also hugging my dogs. Although it was a short period of holiday, there were enough time to try different local food that I have always missed when I study or work abroad, such as these food as presented in the pictures below. Noodle, meet balls and super duper hot crips (sort of like local Walkers) "Sekoteng", like hot ginger alle with jelly and nuts "Tahu Gejrot" Tofu with hot and sweet sauce "Teh Tarik and Moci" Teh tarik is tea with milk and moci is a sweet traditional puffy cake During my holiday time, with support from Pete, I was working part time in Indonesia to present UEA in one of the agents meeting. It was a pleas...
