From Tetley to Twinnings: A Guide to Norwich Tea Rooms

Image
Without a doubt, one of my favourite things about living in the UK in general is the tea rooms.  As a Canadian, the idea of a tea room was pretty foreign to me when I first moved here.  Sure, we have a David's Tea on every corner back in the Motherland, but no real tea rooms.  What's a tea room? It's basically a little café that serves little sandwiches, cakes, scones, and any type of tea you could imagine.  Also, I don't know why I found this so important, but instead of a single mug of whatever tea you choose, they bring you a full pot, with a cute little tea cup.  Based on description, which really doesn't do them justice, it just sounds like a normal café.  But trust me, its so much more than that. Instead of trying to explain it to you, I thought that I would just map out a guide to some of my favourite tea rooms around Norwich so that you can see for yourself (whether literally or virtually). Biddy's Tea Room Biddy's seems to be one of the most p

A Story of a Japanese Student: Saori studying Philosophy 2

Interview 1.    Background of the student While I got a ‘Certificate for Students Achieving the Proficiency Level of Upper Secondary School Graduates’, when I was taking a leave of absence senior high school, I was thinking what I was going to do for the future and career. After I have decided to study in the UK, I was studying English and reading philosophy books. 2.   Why did you choose UEA and your course? Since I was a little, I has liked to thinking about something, so I thought philosophy was a good subject for me to study. As I did not want to go to Japanese university and someone I know since when I was a child, recommended the UK, I decided to study abroad.   3.    Tell me about the differences in three years in Undergraduate? In my first year, I learned each area of foundation in philosophy and laugh background information in philosophy of history. Moreover, I learned other humanities subjects which is relevant to philosophy such as soci

A Story of a Japanese Japanese Student: Saori studying Philosophy 1

Hi everyone! How was your winter holiday? Today, your Japanese Ambassador Yoko will introduce another Japanese student. Saori is a third year student studying  Philosophy.  Hi, I’m Saori Kon and I’m studying Philosophy in undergraduate level in University of East Anglia.  I’m studying mainly European philosophy (It is quite different from universities in Japan. We don’t learn Eastern philosophy in undergraduate level). The course offers various modules such as philosophy of history from ancient Greek to modern, analytical philosophy, philosophy of mind, logic, moral philosophy and aesthetics. One example of unique module is ‘Film as Philosophy’. We leaned the possibility that ‘Film do philosophy or not?’ Regarding what I’m studying in the course, there are various areas in philosophy, so I will give an essay title as an example. In the area of ‘philosophy of mind’, we deal with a question ’what is mind?’ and from this area, I have written an essay ‘In what way (if

Cromer

Christmas holidays are over, Uni is officially back in session and we are now deep in the heart of winter (It even snowed in Norwich a couple weeks ago!), which has got me thinking –pining, really- for the warm summer days or at least the breezy nearly-room-temperature days that spring brings. Being in Norfolk and coming from a tropical locale dotted with sandy beaches and rushing waves, the beach is a definite to-go. One I frequent is Cromer, a tiny seaside town a mere half an hour(ish, could be forty minutes) train ride from Norwich with tickets as cheap as £5 return if you’ve got a railcard- which is worth investing in if you are here longer than a year. The town is quaint, with loads of independent knick-knack shops (nautical-themed, obviously), colourful houses, beach huts and ice cream shops. It’s just big enough to have a day-trip on a nice sunny day when you just need a little getaway. When the weather gets warm enough you could even work up a tan and go for a little

It's Been a While, Where Have You Been?

Hi Friends :) So as it is almost February, I'm guessing that all of you reading this are back at school, which is obviously a thrilling idea.  UEA actually starts pretty late compared to Canada, so we are only in our new second week of the new semester and I already feel behind. Anyway, moving away from my inability to map out when to do my readings, I thought that as a way to ease back into blogging, and avoid the work that I should be doing, I decided to make a holiday photo album.  Now I know what you're thinking, "why do I want to see the Christmas pictures from a girl I don't even know?"- fair point.  BUT, while you may not know me personally, is you are thinking of going on exchange, or you are at UEA right now, then you will know these experiences personally.  You'll know how important it is to spend time with your friends and family if you go home over break, and you'll know that just like me you realized how much you missed them and wanted see

When Asia meets Europe - My Christmas break adventures!

Image
Studying in the UK gives you a great opportunity to explore Europe during Christmas or Easter breaks. Comparing to Azerbaijan, Europe is more approachable to visit from the UK as flights are much cheaper and take less time! After travelling to a couple of European countries over the Christmas break, I've decided to write a small blog post with useful tips for those who are planning to fill their Instagram profiles with cool #travelling pictures over the academic breaks. The blog post will be divided in two sections as I've visited Prague, Czech Republic and Reykjavik, Iceland and have so much to tell you about my holidays in both countries. There will be an additional section with tips on how to plan your travelling and have a stress free holiday. :) Planning your holiday and getting you visa. Planning to travel somewhere for Azerbaijani students (and for many other nationalities who require a travel visa while travelling to Europe) starts from the longest process of apply

Manchester - Here I come

Image
Three weeks ago during the Christmas vacation, I went on a trip to Manchester. I was super lucky because the weather was very nice, sunny for the whole time, despite its notoriety of persistent rain. Maybe thanks to that, the trip was really pleasant and enjoyable.  I am going to blog this event with photos ;) since I think, seeing is believing. Really, Manchester is as not boring as you may think (well, I did think so). It is fun ! ( although as not peaceful as Norwich - Norwich is just the best :P )  so, I took a flight there  - actually, it was cheaper than travelling by train, and of course, way much faster ;) I traveled with Flybe and this is Norfolk from above. when I arrived, it was quite late ( around 6 when I got into the Hotel) and I was very hungry so I took a short walk to Chinatown.  and ended up with Wasabi Restaurant - which serves a range of delicious Japanese food. It even has a sushi belt. Yum yum. The price is reasonable. I really recommend this place.
