Once Every Four Years

Image
What plans do you have for today??? Well... Considering the fact that today is a "special" day, and that there is only a 29th of February once every four years, it is only natural that you do something equally special. Be it a meal out with friends or watching a movie. So, enough said about plans and lets look at some interesting "history" of THE LEAP YEAR. 1. The leap year's extra day is necessary because of the "messiness" of our solar system. One Earth year (a complete orbit around the sun) does not take an exact number of whole days (one complete spin of the earth on its axis). In fact, it takes 365.2422 days, give or take. 2. Until Julius Caesar came to power, people observed a 355-day calendar - with an extra 22-day month every two years. But it was a convoluted solution to the problem and feast days began sliding into different seasons. So Caesar ordered his astronomer, Sosigenes, to simplify things. Sosigenes opted for the 365-day yea

Behind the stage: International office and staff

Image
For whom are applying to the UEA, International office is one of sources you usually end up in contact with. They are handling almost a hundred thousand of applicants every year. In fact, you can see in the picture below, there aren't so many staff. It looks so empty. We can guess how busy they are promoting UEA abroad and in the same time handling all administration inquiries. (There is Pete behind the desk on the left) (Claire is a mother of International student ambassadors, a mom of all nations really. :p)

It's Spring Time....

Image
After the freezing time during late January and the beginning of February 2012, the warm weather has finally arrived in Norwich. Today is the first day in 2012 that the temperature has risen more than 15C. With the dry, sunny day and warm temperature, all lives are cheerful with this pleasant weather. Thursday is one of another busy day on campus with lectures, seminars and practicals. Many of us are trying to catch up with due date work. However, as the weather outside is really lovely, many have spent their break time outside throughout the campus. The UEA square are packed with students who are enjoying the sun and warm weather. Many students are spending their reading outside or gathering with friends playing togehter. UEA broad area is also fulled with people going for a walk.   However, this rapid change weather condition could make few people feel uncomfortable as we have to adapt with contrast warm afternoon and the cold night. So, for those who will be at UEA for the ne

Zambia win AFCON

Firstly, I am not a football fan, critic or spectator for that matter. I've probably only really watched two matches in my life and that was when Ghana was playing. Don't get me wrong, I'm also not that patriotic when it comes to football. Infact, I had no idea the African Cup of Nations was going on and didn't watch any games (even when Ghana was playing), but Sunday the 12th of February history was made for the Zambian National Team. They took home the cup and the title in what seemed to me as the longest game I had ever sat through (it being my third). The whole nighty minutes were played, an additional four minutes added to the game at the end of that, an extra thirty minutes playing time was added (fifteen minutes each on each side of the pitch) and then the deadly penalty round and still not a single goal. Playing against a supposed giant in African Football, Ivory Coast, they both managed to hit with precision for the first five or so shots and then Ivory Coast m

Whitney Houston 'RIP'

Valentine's Day has passed and everyone has showed their love and passion to their loved ones, whether be it your family, long-life partner, friends and relatives. But at the same time, there was shocking and breaking news to the world. Another sad news broke out just before Valentine's Day. Just like in Summer 2009, when Michael Jackson shocked everyone with his departure. Whitney Houston, one of the most famous and inspiring singer, actress, producer and model has left on 11th February 2011, just 3 days before Valentine's Day. She was found dead in her guest room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, the day before the 2012 Grammy Awards. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time. Her awards include two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards in her lifetime. She was also one of the world's best-selling music artists

Valentines Day - 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' [Roman 13:9]

Image
'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' [Roman 13:9] Valentine’s Day is a day where we show our love and respect to the ones who we appreciate. Some could say that we should show appreciation to them every day, but what differs 14th of February each year to every other 364 days in the calendar? Is it the powerful impact of fictional heart shaped paper cuttings or the red velvet roses that scatter across pedestrian floors? We live our lives with routines and rhythms, passing everyday doing things we are comfortable with. We forget these days because it feels like every other day and things just simply blend together. A mere Friday night would be the same as every other Friday night, like every other dinner you have, like every other lecture you go to. Today is the day where it breaks our repetitiveness and will uncomfortably do something we will forever remember. Like a birthday or anniversary, did you remember what happened to your 18th birthday? These events mou

Finally... Snow.

Image
As the days were passing and we were moving towards the end of the Winter, the probability of a snowfall was getting smaller and smaller. Many were disappointed. Others not so much. The weather was annoyingly cold but there was no sign of snow because of the dry weather. Until the midnight of Saturday the 4th of February when..... VOILA!   Within the time limit of one hour the scenery was completely different. The dry and gloomy weather gave its place to fluffy snow which covered the streets, the trees, and the houses of Norwich. Me and my friends were lucky enough to be gathered at my house at this time instead of being out in town, which would have been inconvinient to say the least. We didn't waste a second so we put our jackets on and went outside to do what had to be done: SNOWFIGHT! I hope you enjoyed the snow as much as me and my friends did. Use the comment section to tell me where you were when the snowfall started and what did you do? More pictures on Facebook at "U

Be My Valentine....

So it’s that month of the year again when you go to the city centre and everything is red and heart shaped and you won’t stop receiving marketing emails on your phones telling you to buy a gift or treat for that special someone. That month of the year when guys, well some, go the extra mile to buy their significant other a special gift and girls vice versa. Some couples even have arguments because a partner did not get the gift he/she expected!!! Before I go further, let’s take a little trip down memory lane. There are different opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some say that it originated from St Valentine, a Roman priest who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity and died on the 14 th of February, the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius who was looking to assemble a large army for a war. Most men did not want to sign up for the war because
