The salt levels of oceans on distant Earth-like planets could have a major effect on their climates

Image
The salt levels of oceans on distant Earth-like planets could have a major effect on their climates – according to new research from the Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of East Anglia. A study published today reveals that the circulation in extremely salty or fresh water extra-terrestrial seas would influence their temperatures – and could in fact make for more habitable conditions for alien life. Until recently, computer simulations of habitable climates on Earth-like planets have mainly focused on their atmospheres. But studying their oceans is vital for understanding climate stability and habitability – as on our own Earth. Not only this, but until now, researchers had not considered that the seas on distant Earth-like planets might not be quite like ours - they might be significantly more or less salty than the oceans on Earth. Prof David Stevens, from UEA’s School of Mathematics, said: “The number of planets being discovered outside our solar syste

Vietnamese students and Easter break

Image
This entry is a collection of tours and trips and experiences that Vietnamese students at UEA had during the Easter break 2016. During the Easter break, my facebook timeline was flooded with photos of my Vietnamese friends at UEA at different places with different activities. I was indeed overwhelmed :)  Never before had I been awed by the diversity of ways that Vietnamese students at UEA enjoyed their Easter break. Some went to Paris... Some flew to Spain... Some enjoyed tulips in the Netherlands... Some discovered holy Greek temples.... Some enjoyed mouth-watering food Some enjoyed the sunshine and far away from the gloomy British weather :p But some explored the other corner of the UK - Ireland and climbed mountains there Cambridge is always a dream destination Some realised that London always had something to offer And some became to love Norfolk more thanks to going around Norfolk and Norwich (Gt Yarmouth Beach in the photo below) While som

Spring has Sprung

Image
Spring has sprung!     Spring caught me off guard this year. Yesterday I looked around and it wasn’t cold: it was sunny, warm, and the trees were covered in flowers and leaves. The square was filled with people having a cheeky pint between lectures.                 As I am a 3 rd year and in my last month (!!!) of university, paying attention to what’s happening outside of the library is not exactly something I have time to do.       I envy the people who have time to barbecue by the lake, but soon I'll be one of them!! Spring at UEA is by far my favourite, as everyone is happy, tanned and chilled.   Happy spring everyone!   Guro, Norwegian ambassador

Scotland - Conic Hill

Image
It can be hard juggling uni work, a social life, multiple jobs, sports teams, eating food, sleeping, staying alive... I find I need frequent breaks, where I can let my mind rest and explore new places. So, over the Easter break I went up to Scotland to hike in the mountains. I ended up doing a few hikes before having to drag myself back to reality. The first was Conic Hill The views were stunning! Through forests and over streams... Around lakes and across rocky terrain. I even spied a little pond filled with spawning frogs, croaking their songs out. Soon enough the hill top cam into view.   The walk had been very secluded, with only a few people walking by every few hours. Pictures - especially off my phone- do not do the views justice! Scotland even had beautiful sunny weather for the walk. I wasn't even wearing a jumper! The decent was sad.. The close of a gorgeous day. But all in  all a walk I would definitely recommend. It was slow and gradua
