Lunar New Year in Vietnam

Image
I guess, similar to how some of you celebrate Christmas, Vietnamese people normally spend weeks before the 1st preparing. As far as I remember, in my hometown, the festive atmosphere starts when people visit and tidy their ancestors' graves. Since they have to go to work in the morning so at 3 pm or 4 pm, people have already started the ritual. Roads are busy with vehicles and chit-chat. Sometimes, such simple things remain unforgettable. The next thing is to tidy up and clean our houses. We buy pots of colourful flowers from annual flower markets to decorate our houses. We also love the red color, which represents Luck in our belief so we wrap special red paper around these pots. And then food. Special sweet preserved fruit is totally non-omissible and traditionally (as the majority of us do not have an oven), it requires weeks to dry it out under natural sunlight. There are also other types of food, featured by each region in Vietnam. One of questions I have been f

Budapest Christmas Trip

Image
Over the Christmas holidays, my friends and I visited the beautiful city of Budapest for 4 days. We did a lot of sightseeing in those 4 days. We visited the Parliament, the Castle/National Gallery, Matthias Church, House of Terror Museum, the Central Market Hall, the Chain Bridge, Szechenyi Baths and Pool and even went on a night river cruise down the River Danube. It was just a very fulfilling cultural and such a pretty city.   The House of Terror Museum deserves a special mention because it was genuinely one of the best museums I have been to as it was very well put together, thought-provoking, terrifying museum about the double occupation of Budapest by the Nazis and the Soviet Union and what the people of Hungary had to go through.   Fisherman's Bastion     St. Stephen's Basilica Matthias Church     National Gallery Parliament   Ice-Skating   Matthias Church   The Chain Bridge   View of Budapest     I would h

Ethnic Minorities Caucus at UEA Students Union! :)

Image
Hello everyone,   Welcome back to UEA! Last week I participated in the Ethnic Minorities Caucus of the Students Union at UEA . UEA is also about getting students involved in the Students Union, in its democratic institutions and its governance.   What is a caucus? A caucus is a forum, an assembly, which aims at bringing together here at UEA students that are generally under-represented. As the SU says, “working to end under-representation is a key part of our Union and this year we're taking steps to further engage with our liberation groups though our caucuses.”   Why it matters? The caucus is a space where anyone who self-defines into any of the groups, in this case as an “ethnic minority”, is welcome to go and suggest events and initiatives that would improve UEASU, UEA or the wider world. How was the Ethnic Minorities Caucus? The pillars of the Ethnic Minorities Caucus are the following topics: equality in education and supporting the “Why my

Music at UEA

Image
For today's post, I thought I would focus on something which is very dear to me--music! As a trained classical pianist since the age of 8, being able to continue with this passion was important to me when I decided to move to the UK. Here at UEA I have not only been able to continue playing piano alongside my studies, but I have also discovered new interests along the way! Since the beginning of my very first year in Norwich I have been a member of the UEA Choir . We have three concerts every year (one of which is a lovely carol concert), sometimes in collaboration with local orchestras or UEA's Symphony Orchestra. My favourite recent pieces we have performed in concert include Händel's Messiah (yes, the one with the Hallelujah chorus!), Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Barber's beautiful  Agnus Dei . I love singing in the choir, and it's a great opportunity to make friends with similar passions. My vocal technique has also improved thanks to our great conducto

Bulgaria accepted electronic voting, and WE were part of it!

Image
About 5 hours ago, Bulgarian prime ministers voted 136 for and 56 against the motion to add electronic voting as an option during referendums and elections. This is a landmark achievement for Bulgarian nationals across the world, and this includes those of us in Norwich. Back in October, there was a referendum on this very same proposition initiated by one of our most prominent show hosts, Slavi Trifonov. Local Bulgarians and some current and former UEA students took to the Maids Head Hotel to do their part in pushing this goal to success.      The referendum sadly failed to garner enough votes, due to poor timing and people's general lack of information regarding electronic voting. However, it reminded politicians of our country's great motto - unity makes strength. And now that enough pressure has been mounted on them, they have conceded to our demands and passed the motion with overwhelming approval. Today was a resounding victory for our fledgling democracy but th

MY FUNYOGO SMILE!

Image
MY FUNYOGO SMILE! It has been six years since I had a taste of funyogo, six solid years you know and I still remember the taste along with its good I memories. Even though I am miles away from Ghana, I still carry those memories with me and it always make me smile instantly; its priceless. In light this, I know that one day I will definitely have good memories of my being in UEA and I will instantly smile. Purely because the support I receive, the friendships and the networks l'm building is and will be priceless. ALAST! I HAD MY FIRST FUNYOGO ON  TUESDAY THE 19/01/2016.

10 Reasons to Love the Library

Image
I think we take the library for granted sometimes. I have been talking to my friends back home in Norway about our library, and it has made me appreciate it so much more. For the past week I have basically spent all my time in the building of books and concrete, and this blogpost goes out to the library!   1)       It’s ALWAYS open! I don’t think UEA students realize how rare this is. A friend of mine studying in Oslo told me her library closed at 5pm. Sometimes I haven’t even started working by then. 2)       There are so many rooms to book. Do you want to be in your own bubble? Have an individual room. Do you need to watch a movie? Have a film viewing room. Do you have a big presentation? Have a group room. 3)       IT help desk. Every time I have gone to the help desk they make everything seem so simple. I remember struggling for a day trying to get my timetable on my smartphone for the IT people to fix it within five minutes. They also have the best banter. 4)

Hello Everyone, Welcome back to UEA for the next term! Few days ago, I celebrated Maghe sankranti so heres just a little bit of insight to what it is :) Maghe Sankranti It is a Nepalese festival observed on the first of Magh in Nepali Calendar, which falls around mid January. It is to cerebrate the end of ill-omened month of Poush, when all religious ceremonies are forbidden. Maghe Sankranti brings us some of delicious foods like Till ko laddu (Brown sesame seeds fudge), chakku (Molasys) and tarul (yam). There is a wide variation in the celebration of Makar Sankranti (Maghe sankranti has various names depending on the place) throughout India as well. It Gujurat, it is a festival of the young and old and colourful kiles are flown all around. Ranu South Asia Ambassador

Ireland Day 4 - Moorland

Image
Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you have all enjoyed your holidays as much as I did! Time to settle back into work and the swing of University life as a Second Year Ecology student. Carrying on from my adventures in Ireland last year is Day 4 - Moorland Exploration! On the moors we questioned how varying degrees of height up a mountain would affect the plants that could grow there and therefore the animals that you would find. The higher you go the colder it gets, water is less available and the exposure to wind is increased. Only very hardy, well adapted plants can survive in these harsh conditions. There are 3 different species of Heather found on the moor that we explored, seen as the red carpeting the land in the picture above. Some plants are carnivorous as the one pictured above. This helps in the extreme environment as they maximise their chance of finding food! Despite the harsh conditions we found a few different example of animal life up on the moors,
