UEA @ 50!

Hi everyonee, So I was going through some tweets on the International Ambassador twittter account, and saw a tweet about UEA's 50th anniversary! UEA turns 50 when the next school year begins and there's a whole line up of wonderful events in celebration. These can be found on the UEA website --  http://www.uea.ac.uk/50years/ . I'm especially excited about the festival weekend from the 28th-29th of September this year. I found the UEA timeline very interesting (it's right at the bottom of the page) - it's amazing how much can be accomplished and built in 50 years! Hope you're all enjoying your week, especially the beautiful sun after so much snow :) -Nigerian Student Ambassador

UEA Literary Festival

Image
With our University ranked joint first last year for student satisfaction in the subject of Creative Writing by the National Student Survey, it is only natural that UEA has produced some extremely talented and important writers and poets and has proven to be a great breeding ground for creative thinkers and writers. Part of this success is both added to and celebrated yearly by the UEA Literary Festival running all through Spring this year, with tickets available by calling the UEA Box Office at 01603 508050 or visiting www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk/events This year guest speakers like Lee Child, Kathleen Jamie, and Colm Tóibín to name just a few will all be part of the festivities and you can find information about all the events at http://www.uea.ac.uk/litfest/Spring+2013  or get updates on twitter from https://twitter.com/UEALitFest   Andreas Cosma Cypriot Ambassador

UEA nurses are having a ball

Image
Two nursing students from the University of East Anglia have organised a ball to raise funds for vital medical and educational supplies for a hospital in Africa. Second year students Debbie Delbridge, 29, and Beth Blake, 19, will be visiting Malawi for two weeks at the end of August as part of their studies. They will be working at the Ekwendeni Mission Hospital, based in the north of the country which serves a community of 45,000. They will also be visiting a local orphanage that cares for children with physical and learning disabilities. The trip will give the UEA students a valuable insight into the varied ways of delivering health care in a developing country while learning alongside their Malawian counterparts. Debbie Delbridge, who is studying children’s nursing said “I'm extremely excited about the trip and hope that the experience will enhance my learning. It will also be a great opportunity to discover how different cultures deal with health problems.” “Being a si

Spring - Is it finally here?

Image
Salam Sejahtera (Warm Greetings in Malay Language), I hope everyone had a good weekend! Norwich had its last snow (supposedly said) on late Friday evening. Further to that, on Saturday morning, it was washed away by the rain! Sad to see all the snow disappearing. But then, that means SPRING is here. The sun was shining brightly on Saturday and Sunday! Wished I took some pictures to show it to you. Let's hope the weather gets warmer so the wearing of layers are not required anymore. This picture below was taken in March 2012, when the sun finally showed itself continuously after months of gloomy weather. I personally can't wait for this weather to come. However, if you're planning to any activities indoor or outdoor, do check out the weather forecast through Met Office - it does give quite realiable forecast. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ee/norwich_forecast_weather.html Just a short post from me! Take care and have a good week. -- Regards, Am

It's Snowtime!

Image
Finally in the middle of January, snow has fallen here in East Anglia. And with a vengeance! Temperatures recently dropped to surprisingly low levels; -9 degrees last week. I think I'll use this post to just share some photographs I took and type up a more detailed account of campus happenings later! Hopefully these pictures below will be worth more than my irksome babbling:

A Detour to Scotland

Image
Without a doubt, one of the great things about studying at UEA is the easy access to so many great holiday spots.  This weekend, I took a trip to several Scottish towns to look at schools for next year...and enjoy the scenery, of course! I visited Glasgow: Aberdeen: and Edinburgh: Norwich actually has more snow than Scotland right now - it's a winter wonderland!  Everywhere you look is pretty. Want to know more about traveling in the UK, studying as an American at UEA, or just life?  I would love to hear from you! Becca Farnum American Ambassador americanstudents@uea.ac.uk

SNOW POETRY!!

Image
As a Literature student, walking about in our snowy campus really inspires me to think of some great lines of poetry written in similarly frosty times! Here are a couple of poems for your enjoyment!! Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind Blow, blow, thou winter wind Thou art not so unkind As man's ingratitude; Thy tooth is not so keen, Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude. Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly: Most freindship if feigning, most loving mere folly: Then heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly. Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky, That does not bite so nigh As benefits forgot: Though thou the waters warp, Thy sting is not so sharp As a friend remembered not. Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly: Most freindship if feigning, most loving mere folly: Then heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly. by William Shakespeare A little Snow was here and there A li

Out and about in Norwich

Image
As an international student studying at UEA, one could enjoy meeting people from all over the world and exploring Norwich's interesting places. Last Sunday, me and my friends went to a little cosy tea house called the  House , just off the Benedic Street. We had the fullest English breakfast ever and actually did manage to skip the lunch. Do you know that tea and baked bin are the 1st and 2nd favourite and most consumed food/drink in the UK? After that "brunch", we decided to go to Cinema City in Norwich and watched a film called Amour. Cinema City is an art cinema at St. Andrew street that usually features theme movies with high quality. The highlight of the night is no doubt the film Amour. The title is French for love. You might think it is just another cheesy romance. However, the film itself, defines what love is in the hard way, confrontation of death and ageing. Indisputably the year's best foreign-language film, already a winner of Golden Globe and

Back to reality

Image
Christmas is over; vacations are over… now back to reality... But reality does not have to be so overwhelming. The best way to prepare for exams is to start preparing with time; so here are some tips for a day to day work that will improve our study techniques. 1. Keep in mind that the more we use and manipulate information, the more we will understand it; so take 30 minutes of your time every day to review your lecture notes. 2. Highlight major topics and subtopics; major topics often extend through more than one day’s lecture, and it is easy to lose track of the overall picture from day to day. 3. Don’t try to memorize your notes from the beginning to the end. It’s not the words which are important, it’s the ideas. 4. Use diagrams, charts and graphs. The more ways you can manipulate and experience the material you are trying to learn, the more secure your understanding and memory will be. 5. Use flash cards for those definitions you must memorize.

2013's First Snow

Image
Hope everyone had a productive (and/or relaxing) weekend! I certainly had a mixture of both, as I have one assignment due in for this Thursday. But anyway, most of us here were greeted by snow this morning. The weather earlier this year was pretty nice to us, however, the temperature has dropped significantly and it finally snowed this morning. I am now hoping for it to snow really heavily! However, do make sure you cover up before going out in the cold. Here are some of the photos I took this morning before heading out to lectures! It is expected to snow heavily this evening, so do take care when going back home. Further news about the weather can be found here: http://www.itv.com/news/anglia/story/2013-01-14/wintry-weather-hits-region/ -- Till next time, Amilin Omar UEA International Student Ambassador - Brunei

Very excited about the investment to trains to and from Norwich to London

Biggest Rail Investment since Victorian Era. This is great news, as it will be even easier to get to London and back from Norwich. http://www.itv.com/news/anglia/2013-01-08/biggest-rail-investment-since-victorian-era/ If you get the chance to go London, you must check out the Wolsley, great place for tea, it's a 1920s old Wolsley Car Showroom near Green Park Tube station. http://www.thewolseley.com/ Although whether or not it rivals the great http://www.thetallyhotearooms.co.uk/  in Suffolk, I will leave that up you to decide. Anyone for tea!

10 Things Students MUST Know About Money!!

Image
Living away from home and managing a bank accout for the first time can be tricky business!! Here are some tips to help you get started as you embark on your financial independance: 1. Banks are not your friends!! Do your research before getting any financial product. Ask yourself whether you need it, is it worth it, and have you checked whether it's the best deal on the market. 2. Be boring: Budget Yes, it's boring but if you're going to live on the money you've got and afford a social life too, you must learn to budget. Make a weekly or monthly budget and stick to it. 3. Don't get a car Insurance costs, vehicle tax, petrol, repair bills.... just don't do it! 4. Mobile Phones, another money pit You can save by switching to a sim-only tariff or unlimited packages from less than £20 a month from most large mobile networks. 5. Travel Bills Trains, buses and tubes cost a lot. Always use Megabus on trips to London and if y

The Farnums in England

I had a very, very special Christmas in 2012.  One of the best part's about studying in another country?  When your family comes to visit for the holidays! On 18 December, my parents, grandmother, and brother flew from the USA 'across the pond' to the UK.  It was their first visit to 'jolly old England.'  My boyfriend was here over New Year's as well. We: -Spent several days exploring all the free museums in London, and saw 'Spamalot' in the West End.  Here's us posing on the Jubilee Bridge in front of the famous London Eye: -Went through Platform 9 3/4. -Visited the English town of Farnham, where we get our name.  Here's me reclaiming my castle ! -Rode a carousel at a German market on the banks of the Thames. -Walked through the Norwich Arcade and outdoor Market, beautifully decorated for Christmas - including our world-famous Coleman's Mustard Factory! -Explored the Norwich Castle , built during No

The Battle of Finding Accommodation

It has begun! It is the start of a new semester! Say hello to spring semester. This will be my final semester of my undergraduate life. Scared and excited at the same time! Nevertheless, spring semester is the time when students look for accommodation outside the university (off-campus). Don't worry, the Union of UEA Students is releasing a "Housing List" on.. Friday, 11th January 2013 at 9.00 am So, please make sure you get the housing list early! Especially if you're quite picky about the location, type of house, etc. You can find more details about the Student Housing through http://www.ueastudent.com/housing I am staying off-campus for my final year and I found my current house in October/November during my second year (2011/12 academic year). I decided to look for a house way earlier than everybody else as I am quite picky with the location and the type of house. So, if you're similar to me, you should find a house now before it's gone and tak

New year's resolutions!

Hi everyone. It's me again, Saem. I hope you enjoyed your lovely Christmas holiday for 3 week. Now it's time to go back to uni from next Monday! To be honest, I am not looking forward to it only due to my course tests next week :'( I miss my friends and everything but not the course tests and the course work ! Anyways, it's 2013 now. Every year, I think about my New year's resolutions. I don't think it went very well last year. Nevertheless, I've got quite a few new resolutions on my list. (Always. Haha) This year, my new year's resolutions are - Less shopping - Save up some money - Revise at least twice a week (No cramming!) - Learn to play the guitar - Be a better daughter - Experience more How do they look? If I can stick to them for a year, at the end of 2013, I will be very happy :) What about you? Have you set your New year's resolutions? If not, how about thinking about them now and just jotting down on the paper? It mi

Goodbye 2012 and Hello 2013!

Greetings from Brunei's Ambassador, Amilin! I hope everyone had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year. Despite the rainy (and gloomy) days we had during the winter break, I had one of the best 3-week holidays, ever. My first week of holiday started with a Eurotrip to Venice and Paris. The weather in both cities were quite cold, but nevertheless we had to make the 6-day trip worth it. Touring on the Grand Canal in Venice and the Eiffel Tour in Paris was a must-to-do on our list. The views were magnificent, eventhough it was raining when we got there! For my second week, I spent my Christmas and Boxing Days in Norwich for the very first time. For Christmas, I was invited to my friend's place for a dinner with some friends of hers. It was a lovely dinner, got me making new friends and had random conversation topics until late night. The next day (which was Boxing Day), I visited the city centre to experience the 'shopping fiesta' and managed to grab a few items which

2013.

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! :D Hope everyone had an amazing Christmas and New Year's! This year for New Year's I decided to spend it in London and it was a pretty good experience! It was my first time counting down with friends, ever (Never tried counting down with friends in Hong Kong before). My friends and I wanted to actually countdown right opposite the London Eye, however by the time when we were in Embankment, roads were blocked and we ended up walking to Waterloo Bridge. Next time, if any one of you would like to head down to London for the countdown, you HAVE to go really early (around 6pm) just to get a seat :) Even though, we ended up in Waterloo Bridge, we still had a good time dancing around the bridge, eating and chatting. Just to let you know, once the fireworks end, try to leave the area as soon as possible before it gets REALLY crowded and packed when walking towards the Tube station.  Another thing that you have to do in London during the Christmas an
