International Party preparation!

Image
Preparing for a 3 minute Bollywood dance performance can be more stressful than preparing for a university exam! Started practising twice a week a month ago and now down to practising everyday until 3rd of March: the big day! Not a single practise has gone by where someone wasn't late or there didnt exist a series of arguments. Wouldn't it be great if all individuals got along well and things got done well on time? I so wish.   The big day is 4 days away and the songs for the performance haven't even been finalised. There's always someone who argues against the song suggestions or just doesn't get along with others. Things get messy, everyone loses motivation and patience. Stretching and getting ready for the 4 hours of dancing from now till Wednesday. Wish me luck! Rubina Kalra Indian Students Ambassador

21!

Image
I like to think that regardless of where you live, 21 is a big deal. I myself just turned 21 this last Tuesday, and while it definitely doesn't have the same amount of awesome as turning 21 in my home state of California, it's still a pretty big deal. Over here it seems to be more of an official adult thing. Legally speaking, once you hit 18 you're an adult. Apparently, though, hitting 21 means a bit more of growing up, like getting keys to a house or property, or something similar. I may not have earned myself some more responsibility - I definitely still woke up at seven to finish a paper for a twelve o'clock deadline, and have no house keys to new property in sight - but at least when I get home, I'll be able to actually walk into a bar! Hope you enjoyed that bit of self-important musing - and happy belated birthday to me! =P Kathy American Student Ambassador

Final year project...

Image
Ok so my final year project is looking at whether Wnt5a (a non canonical gene) plays a role in activating the Wnt canonical signalling pathway. At the moment tissue samples are gotten from patients at the NNUH and the crypts from the colon are cultures and looked at to observe proliferation......Well I know a lot of people wont understand what the heck i'm talking about. To cut the long story short, these crypts are made to survive in media containing growth factors but most of the time I go into the lab and observe my beautiful cells, I find out that most of them are dead :( Im thinking im not feeding them well but I am....and that makes me wonder if I can actually be a mum :( I mean if I really cant handle cells that small, what about a bigger baby...HAHAHAHHA Thats hilarious! I'll make a purrrrfect mum! Later guys! Have a great weeekend Adanna Nigerian Students Ambassador

I want more snow. Now.

Image
Most people I know have complained that they are pretty sick of the snow but I really like it and actually want some more! I just don't want icy pavements but that's what happens when the snow melts. Iit's just so pretty and makes everything look nicer even though it's so cold. At the moment, the skies are grey, there is a miserable drizzle and occasional random spontaneous brief spots of sunshine. Mostly though, it's rather dull and the weather's not nice enough to allow a pint in the square. And if there's lots of snow then my view from the library carrel would be GORGEOUS while I sit inside with my notes, nice and cosy. So let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Indian Soc inviting you to Holi - The festival of colors

let me just give you some basic information about the Festival of colors as some of you may not know about it. Holi is the Hindu festival that welcomes the Spring and celebrates the new life and energy of the season. Although Holi has religious roots, not much religious activity is involved in its celebration. Holi is the most energetic Indian festival, filled with fun and good humour; even the strict rules of separation between castes are abandoned. Holi is also called 'The Festival of Colours', and people celebrate the festival by smearing each other with paint, and throwing coloured powder and dye around in an atmosphere of great good humour. Indian soc is planning to celebrate Holi in UEA probably next week. To find out when and where please Join UEA Indian Society Group on http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=135467058252&ref=ts There will be some indian snack will be available as well. Ohh Ice Skating

Image
Out of all the sources of entertainment in Norwich, I still choose to do ice skating. I've been to Planet Ice , the ice skating rink next to Asda, again. It has just been opened after months. That was my third time so far and I am still not getting any better at skating. *cry* I guess that coming from a tropical country doesn't really help..lol... Hmm there must surely be a trick that I'm missing :s Hints please! :) Or maybe I should just stick to simpler things like bowling or swimming. lol... Have a good weekend everyone, Suri UEA Mauritian Students Ambassador

Uni.......

Image
Well its that time of the year where school work gets so tough and all you want to do is stay in bed for as long as possible. Never really knew what it took to get a degree at a university but quite frankly, its not as easy as you picture it when you are not in the University. Taking different modules, writing essays, studying, writing course tests, research, lab projects, extra curricular activities, social nights....GOSH!!! How much can one student take? So one thing I tell myself and encourage you to do as students is, when you think you have reached the limit, TAKE A BREAK!!!...Chill, go to the gym, listen to music, apply for a coursework extension or do whatever calms you down. Beacuse one thing is for sure, if you carry on with all the stress and you break down, lectures will go on for students who are fit and are able to make it to lectures....School is not gonna end because of you so why end because of school? :) Later! FOOOOD!!!!

Image
Well after how many years of living in Norwich and all the stress of going to the African-Caribbean market every now and then to get ingredients for a good meal, an African-Caribbean restaurant has finally OPENED!!!!! :) YaY... Can you imagine the excitement??? or the amount of people that have been waiting for this???? lool (I guess not). In fact, last year I was looking to rent a shop to start cooking some native food but for obvious reasons of academic workload, it just seemed impossible. Oh WELL!!! Yesterday I decided pay a visit to MAMA's KITCHEN :) and I can't say I feel any less happy. I invite you to try it out :) Ha ha PS: They do deliveries so you can just lay in bed and have it delivered to your door step...AMAZING!!! :) Have a good weekend guys, Adanna, UEA Nigerian Students Ambassador.

Sunday Roast

Image
One of the best bits of the weekend is definitely Sunday roast! Also known as Sunday dinner, Sunday lunch, Sunday tea and Roast dinner, it comprises of roast meat, roast potato, Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, vegetables and gravy...yum! Traditionally, the meats used are beef, pork, lamb and chicken though these days, if you're vegeterian or vegan, you can have a Quorn or nut roast option. So if you've been out on Saturday night and have been lying in all Sunday morning, it's time to head to a nearby pub for some good grub :) Cheers, UEA Malaysian Ambassador

Some Californian Musings...

Image
I've been here a year and a half now and I'm still not over the fact that I live in England. Recent examples of this: 1. Still marvelling at the fact that I practically live next door to a Fish and Chip shop. 2. Spending an afternoon walking in the Norwich Lanes, totally not over how amazing they are. Example number one just reminds me of watching movies when I was younger, watching Paul Bettany try and win over Kirsten Dunst in Wimbledon with two giant paper-wrapped packets of fish and chips. The fact that my housemates and I can decide on such amazing fried food for dinner and be eating it five minutes later always brings deliciously home the point that not only am I no longer in suburbia, California - but that, stereotypes aside, I am most definitely in England. The Norwich Lanes do much the same for me, and no matter how many times I walk them up and down, I still love them. Before I moved to Norwich, I spent way too much time sitting at my computer at home, looking up pict

Start of a New Month !

Image
Well its the start of a new month and i'm beginning to think that this weather should make up its mind if its really gonna snow or rain or if the sun is gonna come out.... Cos you wake up and look out your window and then you think: hmmm....well its not so cold, I think i'll put on a little jumper and then half way into the day, you are freezing your head off. I guess its something to do with the English weather but I just love it because you look forward to what weather to expect everyday :) Then again its the lover's month. Hope everyone has a date and has started making plans for February the 14th... Be sure to give gifts to loved ones so you can receive :) xoxoxoxoxox. Later Guys! Nigerian Students Ambassador

Silent Disco!

There's a silent disco at the LCR tonight! Instead of a speaker system, everyone wears wireless headphones and dances! There are two DJs so you can switch between two channels and pick the music you like. If you take your headphones off, you'll be greeted by the bizarre sight of people dancing to no music and chanting completely different lyrics. Last year, I vaguely remember half the crowd doing the macarena while the other half wound around the LCR in a giant train. Epic! Cheers, UEA Malaysian Ambassador
