Travelling by train in the UK

Image
I love travelling by trains. They’re much faster, more comfortable and you can do more things while sitting on a train, like reading a book or chatting with your travel partners.  I used to travel a lot by train during my A-level days, as I used to live in the South of England and train tickets are a lot cheaper there. However, trains in East Anglia can be bit pricey sometimes since they are operated by a different company, but that shouldn't stop you from using the trains at all! Here are some tips on how you can get cheap train tickets. 1)     Buy in advance of the journey: Don’t wait until the moment you get to the train station and buy your ticket there, last-minute tickets will surely be pricey. Instead, search for deals on the official rail ticketing platform, Trainline! Ideally, it is advised that you should book 12 weeks in advance in order to grab the most ideal tickets for your journey! Deals can be very good sometimes, only £10 for ret...

STAYING HEALTHY AT THE UEA

Image
Staying healthy is extremely important as a student and as much as you might feel it's impossible to keep up with health when you have 1001 essays to write, IT MUST BE DONE! Here are five things to do to keep up the health for very low prices:  1) SKIPPING: Skipping for at least 20 minutes per day will do wonders for your body. You don't have to do it all at once. 10 minutes, twice a day will burn more than 200 calories and that's 1000 calories a week. Talk about being on your way to a sharp, slim trim! 2) SMOOTHIES: No one needs to tell me how hard getting those fives a day are. The best way to curb that problem is with smoothies. You can make them yourself. A perfect ratio of vegetable: fruit: liquid will have you set for the day and if you have it multiple times a day, even better.                                               ...

Cravings for home treats - especially bubble tea!

When I first came to the UK for university, one of the things that would make me homesick is the food. It's safe to say that British people don't eat rice every day, or have siumai or dimsum on the ready every where you go.  However, the good thing about Norwich is that there are loads and loads of choices of restaurants for Chinese food, so it makes the homesickness a bit better! Not only are there lots of options for Chinese, there is also Asian cuisine on campus at INTO! I bet you didn't realise that!  There's a pretty common misconception that only INTO students can use the INTO cafeteria, but everyone on campus can use it. For £4, you can get a main meal and two sides - I'd say that's a great deal, and it will definitely fill you up!  Luckily, Norwich is quite a multicultural city, so there are lots of food options. The types of Chinese cuisine are endless here, from dimsum to hotpot. You can even buy your own hotpot ingredients and do it yourse...

Two words, DIDI’S DINING. Moving to a different country isn’t always easy, let alone a whole other continent. I mean at first It’s thrilling and fun with all the new experiences and encountering new people and cultures and all but if you’re anything like me, it won’t be long before the thoughts of home food will start to haunt you. This was my reality by December of my first year where I was just constantly craving Nigerian food. It’s not like I can’t cook. I definitely can. Chef Chioma all the way. But there’s just something about that home food made by an aunty if not by mommy directly and what I wanted the most was a bowl of ogbono with assorted meats and some pounded yam that I would fully take to with my hands. I wanted some asun (goat meat) or suya. After research and research, I found Didi’s Dining. Didi’s Dining is an authentic African & Caribbean restaurant here in Norwich and you can find everything from Jollof, to Gizdodo, to Jerk Chicken & ...

Halal food in Norwich

Image
When I first move to Norwich for studying in UEA, initally I was struggling  to find halal meat in Norwich, so for the first few weeks I had to survive on eggs, fish and vegetable. Unlike London, Norwich was not very multicultural 4 years back(the situation has improved greatly over the years ) One day of sheer curiosity I asked someone in the UEA Mosque where can I find halal meat, he directed me to go to Magdalen Street , better known as Anglia Square (I have heard it was the old city centre of Norwich ). Entering Magdalen street I was able to find several butcher and grocery stores where halal meat is offered the most famous probably is Haider Butchers which is located opposite to the 99p store and also Al Barakah Halal butchers , there are other shops such as Shah Jalal Halal and a few other Indian shops.  Haider Butchers AL Barakah Butchers The Asda in Norwich also provides Halal meat and also other halal products such as kebabs , burger pat...

International Ambassadors Celebration Event - Biryani Recipe

On the 27th May, International Ambassadors of UEA were invited to an celebration event in regard to their contributions at the International Office. Part of the event comprised of the Potluck lunch, where every Ambassador was asked to bring a dish from their country. As a Pakistani, I thought it to be the best to bring Chicken Biryani, so that the International Office and the Ambassadors can have a taste of some authentic Pakistani cooking. As a request from my supervisors, who in particular liked the dish, I am putting up the recipe of cooking the dish. Its relatively easy to cook the dish this way, rather then preparing the dish from scratch. Ingredients required: (this list has been modified for the ingredients being available locally in Norwich and in the UK in general) Rice (6 cups; recommended type: Basmati, generally available everywhere in Norwich). Half Chicken in pieces, or 500 grams of Boneless chicken for continence (for those looking for Halal meat, it is avai...
