Faith at University -UEA Interfaith Day!

Hi everyone! In light of the recent and first ever Interfaith Day that took place on campus about a week ago (20th February), I thought I should do a quick post on faith at university/UEA. This is a big part of many people's lives and I beleive it's not talked about enough (hence the first Interfaith Day). I think the Interfaith day was an amazing event because it promoted dialogue between the faith and belief societies on campus and the idea of religious tolerance in general. I helped with the UEA Christian Union stand in the Hive and got to meet and  interact with so many amazing people!Over 70 people turned up to the event and the day culminated in a big discussion/forum at the Julian Buidling. Being an international student at university can be a a difficult time adjusting, and fitting in. Some have an easier time being away from home, while others may feel a little isolated a lot of the time. It's important to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally and also

Petra tou Romiou, "Πέτρα του Ρωμιού" Cyprus!

Image
During the holiday break in December, I visited my home country Cyprus. On my way from Nicosia(home city) to Pafos I made a stop along the highway at the famous Petra tou Romiou (Rock of the Greek), also known as Aphrodite’s Rock. The combination of the beauty of the area and its status in mythology as the birthplace of Aphrodite makes it a popular tourist location. Cyprus is renowned as the island of beauty and Petra tou Romiou is definitely worth a visit. According to ancient legend and mythology, this is the place of birth of the Greek goddess of love and the mythology has been told by various Greek mythology storytellers along with stories about her part in major events during the classical era of Greece, The Trojan War. To the founding of a nation that ultimately ruled the world, Rome, her influence spans the generations. Legend has it that she was a product of Ouranos (Sky) coming from Cronus, his son. Out of the foam of the waters, the birth of Aphrodite took place and

Beautiful Norfolk countryside and its inhabitants

Image
Good day everyone and hello from the Russian ambassador! Today I wanted to share with you the thing that stroke me most when I moved to Norwich and Norfolk (and something I still can't get over even though it has been 6 months since I moved). It is... Norfolk countryside. England is a beautiful country wherever you go, but I have never seen beaches more beautiful than in Norfolk. My ultimate favourites are Winterton and Blakeney. If you are ever in this area you should definitely check them out and not only for their beauty but also for their surprising inhabitants - seals! Yes you heard me right, you will be walking on a beach and seals will be swimming around you a meter away or even lay casually right in the middle of the pathway! I am attaching some of the pictures I took recently, because we all know a picture says a thousand words! :) Enjoy! With lots of love from Norfolk, Ksenia

Engineering! My long lost social life.....but success!!!

Image
Being a postgraduate student at UEA is an amazing experience I have to say. Neverthless, for the last one month I feel like I have had no social life :p I think this is due to my inability to comprehend electrical engineering. Being an Energy Engineer student, I understand that I will have to deal with a variety of subjects, such as wind engineering and wave and tidal engineering but I never thought I would be doing electrical engineering! So recently I have been doing some work in the Lewin Lab, which at the beginning I found dreadful, but lately it has been growing on me. I finally found a way to actually understand what I am doing! I overcame my fears of inadequacy, visited my lecturer, and was very pleased to leave his office having understood so many things. Finally!! So although now electrical engineering does not seem like a hurdle to my success in my Masters, I still have an idea to share! In two weeks time I will be assesed while setting up some apparatus and circuits and

Germany: The Sugar Cone Tradition

Image
Hi everybody! It’s the German Ambassador writing to you, this time about a really German tradition. I am going to visit a Norfolk school soon and the teacher asked me to talk with the children about school in Germany and the tradition of “Zuckertüte” or “Schultüte” (translating to “sugar cone” or “school cone”), depending on the region you live in. It was then, when I remembered that this thing is really unknown in the rest of the world (I had already noticed that in France!) and how sorry I always felt for the children who didn’t get one. It works as the follows: Every child in Germany gets a Zuckertüte for his/her first day of school. Below, you can see a picture of me on my first day on my official school picture. The writing on the blackboard translates to “To the first day of school”, in case you forget later just why you were posing in front of a photographer in the first place… Just kidding ;) You usually get a big cone like that from your parents and it will be fille

Exam preparation: Study tips

Image
1.    Preparation Do not leave studying until the last minute, start preparation early and in good time. Make use of the time you have now and make a revision timetable. Start by writing down how many exams you have and if you know the days on which you have them. Organize your study time accordingly and find a balance you are comfortable with. 2.    Study Space Find a place where you are comfortable working. This may be your room however most students will find that they are easily distracted here. The library is a good place to work, make sure you are working in a quiet place away from your friends whom may distract you.   3.    Group study or Work Alone or Both Sometimes working in a group may be beneficial to you. You may find it that it helps you learn when you tutor your peers or it may be that your colleagues will explain a concept in a way that you understand. If you want to make use of group studying invite your friends to revise through past papers
