CHRISTMAS IN ZIMBABWE

Image
Christmas in Zimbabwe is celebrated very differently from other parts of the world I have been to, but especially Norwich and England in general. It seems here, the whole city is involved in the celebration but back home its more of a family to family thing, not a city to city thing.  Don't get me wrong, we still celebrate, just differently. It's more about family, God, food and good music. Our Christmas is basically the equivalenet of America's thanksgiving.  There is no emphasis on gifts, they are optional, there's no emphasis on Santa, he is optional, there aren't always fancy lights because we don't always have electricity.  Not to mention that there is no snow, it will be 32 degrees or more.  We have BBQs (which we call 'Braais'), we go to church for a Christmas service, we open up our gates or doors and everyone eats.  Below are some pictures of what you can expect to see in Zimbabwe during Christmas. Music.    Everyone Eats.

What Are You Listening To?

So you're sitting in the library, working hard, being a star student, when a group walks in.  You spot them right away, loud, laughing, and walking right toward you.  You came to the library for the quiet, and now these people are going to ruin it.  So, like any prepared uni student, you pull out your  headphones and sink into the familiarity of your favourite study music.  What's playing? In case your playlist for studying needs a little but of an update, or if you are just looking for some new music, I've put together a list of some of my top studying tracks for you to click and listen. Diwali Hacks for University!

Image
Waking up at six am and rushing about to make sure that the Diwali Puja tracks are ready and the lyrics are out is always on my Diwali to do list. Making sure you help mom serve the Gulab Jamuns and the rasgulla after the gym shaming feast for breakfast and the final wave of soul crushing nostalgia comes with not having ma yell at me for not showering and having a morsel. I also deeply miss the flower lady who would always argue with me in the name of bargaining essentially and after she would win anyway I'd console myself with the oncoming Jalebis.       Diwali is not just the festival of lights, its the time of your year wherein you take time to tell your parents that you love them for putting up with the world's economy and stress to raise and love you, and to remind your siblings that you don't really hate them even though you say otherwise all the time.   But then you find that you're in university preparing for what feels like a coursework tha

Menemen ! Delicious - Easy - Quick Hi everyone, today I am going to tell you how can you cook one of very delicious Turkish foods called as `menemen` ! You can cook it for your breakfast, lunch or dinner. It can be the best choice for you and your friends. Ingredients (serves 4 ) 1 onion 2 peppers 6-7 tomatoes 3 or 4 eggs quarter cup of sunflower oil or quarter package butter or you can use both of them because in my opinion butter makes it tastier. However, If you don't like butter you can use just sunflower oil. salt black pepper Preperation Firstly, we should chop pepper and onion into small pieces. Normally, I was adding the onion first into heated pan when I was cooking it in Turkey. But I noticed that peppers are thicker than Turkey`s so they are frying later than onions. Therefore, we should add pepper to pan first. after 3 minutes we should add the chopped onions to pan. while our peppers and onions are frying we should peel the toma

Discovering Norwich - Norwich City University of the ARTS

Image
Memories from Norwich City - Norwich University of the Arts Recently I had a presentation and attended a conference at the Norwich University of the Arts, also known as NUA. This institution is not part of the University of East Anglia. However attending this conference allowed me to have a visit within the NUA facilities, which were great for an institution teaching in ARTS. Norwich University of the ARTS Main Building NUA Entrance  NUA mainly has one big building where courses are delivered mostly. Among the many interesting things that catch the eyes within this small institution of Arts in Norwich, NUA exhibition centre, also known as the East Gallery, is the most fascinating. The entrance to the East Gallery    The East Gallery is an exciting, city centre gallery space showcasing the best modern and contemporary art through its curated exhibitions programme. During my short visit to the gallery, I visited an exposition on "computer art in virtual reality

Oh the weather outside is frightful! - Tips on staying warm

Image
Oh the weather outside is frightful! Tis the time of the year when we Singaporeans in UEA complain the most because of the cold English weather... Leaving our sunny island to this winter wonderland does get hard sometimes but here are some friendly tips to help you students get through the winter period :) Invest in thick bathrobes and  bedroom slippers Waking up in the morning to the cold is painful and sets you shivering immediately, so place the bathrobe and slippers next to your bed and get warm and toasty the first thing in the morning! Primark sells these items at a really affordable rate, so the next time you are in town pick up some robes and slippers! 2. Invest in a fleece blanket Having a thick duvet closest to your skin when sleeping keeps you warm but a fleece blanket or a thin blanket on the top prevents convective heat loss. That way you have a restful sleep at night.   3. Try a hot water bottle!   Not only do girls use hot water

Economics Society Christmas Ball

Image
So what are balls? It's quite a British sort of social event. It's essentially a formal dinner where everyone gets to dress up where we all enjoy a lovely 3 course meal followed by dancing. Not ballroom dancing or anything, just whatever sort of dance you're feeling! My postgraduate study is in Economics so my course mates and I all decided to attend the Economics Society Christmas Ball yesterday evening and it was an amazing night. We all met up at someone's flat on campus to have some drinks and get ready together. Then when we arrived we had a free cocktail drink and we were just mingling around and taking pictures with the lecturers and students. Our three course meal consisted of goats cheese and butternut squash salad as the starter, roast turkey for the main, and cheesecake for dessert. After dinner ended, we all started dancing and it was so fun dancing with the lecturers and everyone. When the song Heyyyy Macarena came on, every single person on the dan
