MSoc-SEASoc Paintball Game

Image
The Malaysian Society collaborating with the South-East Asian Society had hosted the Paintball Game at the Combat Paintball, Thetford last Saturday. It was a whole new experience for me although last year the Malaysian Society (collaborating with the Brunei and Mauritius Societies) had hosted the exact same event last year. This is because last year I did not play the game in the snow! It was as if we were participating in the World War 2, marching in Bastogne. I can say, though the cold caused our sight to be temporarily impaired (our goggles and head gears were fogged), the snow made the game relatively more real and challenging. I had a lot of fun although I spent most of the time trying to see through the fog, and openly got shot as a result of it. I hope the Malaysian Society will continue hosting the game next year! Don't forget to join in the fun if you have the opportunity to do so. Besides having fun shooting your mates legally, you may get the opportunity to make n

Student Life in Pictures

Image
Spring is here, But no sun. Time to revisit, How the year went through , In pictures So the last semester of the 2012/13 academic year draws to its end and everyone suddenly becomes excited with the thoughts of going back home during the easter break or may be just because "no more need to wake up early" for 9 am's lectures! At last something to cheer about in this cold and cruel spring weather! I decided to share our own student experiences in pictures and I bet some of them do certaibly bring back some memories! :) Does this image rings some bells to your ears, especially for those who have loads of 9 am's lectures! :P When we attempt to change the meaning of collusion to group work, everyone of us had this friend who would self-labelled himself/herself "Einstein"! :P (Though He/She is very helpful sometimes!) Does this remind you of times when youu said "Ahh...this is an easy question with an easy answer!" And then when y

Luis de Berniere at UEA

Image
Last week was our annual Voices from Greece celebration and this year our honourary guest was novelist Luis de Berniere. Here are just some of the things he told us. Look out for the full interview in Concrete coming soon!! What did you think of the film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin"? Most people think I hate the film but I actually don't. I thought some of the cinematography was brilliant and some of the acting extraordinary. Perhaps Nicholas Cage wasn't as good as I would have liked though. And I also felt that there were extreme pressures from America: in my novel the reason why this love story is so strong is because Pelagia and Captain Corelli don't actually make love until they are both much older. The film however had to have a sex scene despite the fact I was against it. What are you working on at the moment? I will be releasing a book of poetry inspired by the Greek poet Konstandinos Cavafis. He is a poet that I deeply admire. I particu

A Paid Uk Degree? Pourquoi Pas!

Image
With the recent changes in the Government policies concerning University fees subsidies, British students may feel the need to study on the Continent, where tuition is cheaper or even free, compared to the £27,000 they have to forked out here only for tuition fees over three years. So why are 13,000 French students coming to the UK( Source: The Telegraph) French Degree vs British Degree Source: Google Images I have a lot of french friends who study at UEA either as an exchange student (Erasmus) or doing a full degree here. Let us meet one of my friends from "The Eiffel Tower" city of Paris who tells us her experience of being a full time undergraduate student at UEA. My friend's name is Flora Collardeau. She is a 22 years old student at UEA in Creative Writing and she claims: “Before attending a British university, I went to a French university for a year but disliked the teaching method. I was in a class or lecture hall of around 1,500 students, we lis

Norwich Cathedral

Image
Norwich is such an interesting and beautiful city, now that easter vacations are comming it is the perfect time to go out and explore the city. I reccomend to visit the Norwich Cathedral. It was founded in 1096 and it is the second largest cathedral in England. It is surrounded with beautiful gardens and it is a very interesting place to visit. You can easily get there by bus, some of the buses that take you there are 11, 13, 21/22. It is really a beautiful place, you will not regret it. Harlen Gonzalez, Mexican Ambassador

Washi: The Art of Japanese Paper

For six weeks in 2013, Norwich is home to a festival of Japanese handmade paper, or washi. The Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) Gallery is showing two unique collections of historic and contemporary washi, demonstrating both continuity and change in this ancient tradition. The International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA) is also organising two exhibitions, at the Anteros Arts Foundation and Mandell’s Gallery. Paper artists around the world have been invited to submit work that embodies the essence of the Japanese papermaking heritage. In parallel with these three exhibitions, there will be a one-day conference on Japanese paper on Saturday 16 March, to be held at NUA, several papermaking workshops, and a new book. These events offer a unique opportunity to view and engage with handmade papers from Japan and elsewhere. Norwich has much to offer in addition, as a well-preserved medieval city that boasts a fine cathedral, castle and the Sainsbury Centre for

Hull

Image
Last week, I had the opportunity to give a lecture about American politics in Hull, a town in the north of England near York.  (One of the great things about studying at UEA is definitely being part of an awesome rail network and closely-knit universities that like to share students and opportunities!) What's in Hull, you ask? Well, just for starters: The birthplace of William Wilberforce , a leading British abolitionist and Member of Parliament. The biggest parish church in England. A port town with gorgeous waterways and lots of old boats. Lots of museums about north England's natural and industrial history. A pub hosting the Plotting Parlour, where Yorkshire governors planned to bar the King from the city, helping spark the Civil War. And lots more!  UK cities, even the smallest ones, are rich with history and character.  And Norwich is no exception, as you can see from our other blog posts! As always, feel free to ge

KAOS Fashion Show 2013

Image
After 3 years of studying at UEA, I finally attended the KAOS Fashion Show last night (Sunday, 10th March 2013) held at the LCR. KAOS stands for Kids Action Overseas and this charitable foundation aims to help poor children in Kenya. All of the profits obtained from the last night's show will be donated to the orphanage. Nevertheless, it was a good show and the turnout for the event was quite high. Doors opened at 7.00 pm and managed to grab seats with a good view. Raffle tickets were available for purchase by the audience with all proceeds donated to the orphanage too. Unfortunately, it wasn't my luck and didn't win anything last night. Firstly, the show started off at 7.30 pm with a dance by the African-Carribean Society. Next up, it was the showcase of clothing lines by different sponsors such as New Look, House of Fraser, Crew, ARK, Warehouse, Mango and Ann Summers. Well done to the organisers of the KAOS Fashion Show. Just a short, qu

Learn about Geological Science at UEA!

Image
Last week I made a new friend at a social event at UEA and found out she is doing a degree in Geological Science at UEA. I seized the opportunity to learn a little bit more about her studies and she happily gave me a short description of her course and I thought sharing this information to new prospective students as well students already at UEA. Over the year, the geology department at UEA has organised a wide range of career focused events, like trips to geological career’s fairs and taking one day per year off timetable in order to allow employers to come in and talk about their company and also a chance for students to do a bit of networking. While chatting to my friend, the question of what geology undergraduates actually study and what they do with geology was our main discussion. And my friend gave me a list of a few things that can be done with geology that you might or might not know about and interestingly there are some wquite interesting ones that we normally d

The Joys of Norwich

Image
One of my favourite things about Norwich is how artsy it is! Our city is filled with the nicest little shops and treasures - from cosy cafes to vintage stores and interesting bars (like the Birdcage). Its easy to be engrossed in the campus and completely forget about all that the city has to offer (apart from Chapelfield mall) -the usual stop for most students. Take time out to explore all the stores on the Norwich Lanes, you'll be surprised at what you may find! This website provides all the information about the independent retailers on the Norwich Lanes, as well as eateries and historical attractions (there's even a map!) -   http://www.norwichlanes.co.uk/ Also, just thought to share my newest discovery - Patisserie Valerie. My friend and I stumbled across it while searching for a birthday cake for me in January and I've been hooked ever since! (we're making another trip to the cafe tommorow). They have the most amazing cakes to order or eat-in, and the ambience

2013 International Summer School

The 2013 International Summer School is fast approaching! If you are interested, make sure you register your today at www.uea.ac.uk/summerstudyabroad/interested and you could be sat here in the sunshine this July!

Could it actually be S----g?

Image
Helloo all! Consecutive days of sunshine here at UEA! Now if THAT doesn't merit a blog post, then what does? :) The windows in my room are west-facing, and the past two afternoons I've been a first-hand victim of the 'greenhouse effect'. Making the mistake of leaving my windows closed and heading out to a lecture, I found upon my return that my room had evolved into something not unlike a sauna. My desk had melted into a messy brown puddle. True story! Anyways. That aside, it is absolutely beautiful here in East Anglia. The sun is shining, it's 14 degrees, people are out and about, playing frisbee, eating on the grass and in the 'square', being happy (Pictures included below!). The daffodils are also showing some initial signs of life, and I'm walking around in jeans and a half-sleeved shirt with a definite spring in my step (pun intended). Is Spring really here? To quote the title of this post, could it actually be Spring?  Well, I thought I'
