Ghana independence day

On March 6, 1957, the people of Ghana celebrated the end of colonial rule in their country and this Saturday the 6th of March 2010 Ghanaians all over the world will celebrate 53 years Independence.

Many workers in Ghana have been given the day off to recognize celebrate and honor the heroes of our country especially Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the founder of Ghana. Ever since my childhood days, I have always adored and appreciated what Ghana’s Independence Day stands for. It has also always been one of my best holidays of the year. I remember a time when many different schools will come together to participate in marching competitions. Each school’s best groups marched in a large circle and the bystanders and supporters watched from the outside of this circle. It was a festive and very joyous occasion with people selling food (plantains, eggs), drinks, and frozen treats. When the students got ready to march, they became very serious, and extremely enthusiastic about winning the competition. The leading student’s from each school will commonly march and stop in front of the judges and they will all put on a twirling show like no one else had done before this followed with an over excited crowd cheering and shouting.

The atmosphere there was truly amazing and was definitely a site to behold. Ghana has many great moments like this, we have just recently hosted the newly sworn American president Barrack Obama, whose wife’s history can be traced back to Ghana. Barrack Obama recognized Ghana as one of the fastest developing countries in Africa.

Coming Saturday 6th March 2010, there will be no marching by Uea Ghanaian students. However, a different form of celebration most of us would rather participate in called an Independence day bash which will take place off campus and it will be the very first Independece day party at UEA. Really looking forward to it.
