Memories Diary: International Party 2009

UEA Norwich does provide a diverse cultural experience as it hosts students from more than 100 countries. It is a campus based university about 2 miles from Norwich city centre and provides best academic, research and entertainment facilities on its 320 acres greener campus. Throughout the year a number of social and cultural events are organized by UEA, individuals, societies and student union. However the most fascinating event is really the international party that is organized every year in start of spring. UEA provides one of the best venues for live entertainment, music and club activities on its campus called the LCR. This year party will be held in the LCR tomorrow (March 3, 2010) as usual.

Last year party started with an international food evening followed by performances from different societies and individuals. At the end it turned into a club night. Great traditional and tasty Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Indian food was served before performances. After having a taste of delicious food around 20 societies and individuals performed different cultural and traditional items. The prominent ones among those participated include Vietnamese, Caribbean, Asian, Thai, Brunei, Chinese, Uzbek, and Indian societies. There were a number of individual performances like Egyptian and special appearances such as Bollywood. A number of society members were wearing their traditional dresses and costumes while performing. The most interesting aspect I observed was the participation of international friends in traditional performances of different societies.

Vietnamese society was the first while Indian society was the last to perform but both really spread colours on the stage. Vietnamese society presented a traditional Bamboo dance followed by a song called “Great Circle of Vietnam”. Indian society had major contributions and presented a number of different items including “Bhangra” by the members wearing traditional dresses such as “Saarhi”. Almost each performance was the best but some of them were really interesting due to different reasons. Caribbean society presented a dance developed by the labour force working in cool mines in the past. I really liked the dance called Capoveira that was imitating fighting between the two. Another group presented a performance by using a number of rubbish things being tools for playing. I also enjoyed the Chinese traditional lion dance very much. The theme of last part was dancing and everyone really enjoyed it with the best English and Hindi songs. This exciting event came to an end at midnight.

I am really looking forward into this year party which will hopefully bring us a lot of fun and taste together. This post is to share and remember my friends who attended this great event and had fun with us last year. The majority of them are now graduated and working in different parts of the world. Hope to see some of them tomorrow and experience a great combination of cultural and social activities.
At last, I must advice all prospective students to spend some time in social and cultural events like this as these provide general information about different countries and cultures in addition to have fantastic food and entertainment.
