Societies at University of East Anglia

Life at University of East Anglia is not just restricted to lectures and course works. There is a lot more on offer and my personal favourite is the huge collection of societies and clubs managed by the Student Union. Societies are a great way of meeting people who have the similar interests to yours and socialising with them outside the academic mediums - lectures or classes.

UEA has a society for everyone ranging from academic societies - Accounting Society, Actuarial Society, and Medicine Society; cultural or country specific societies, to recreational societies like Astronomy Society and Quidditch (yes we are proud that we have a Quidditch society and team).
I personally have been involved in Actuarial Society, Pakistan Society, Islamic Society and International Student Society. Most of my association has been with Actuarial Society which I will discuss below.
UEA Actuarial Society’s main goal is to promote the Actuarial Profession among students and to create socialising and networking opportunities for interested students. In my second year I was the President of UEA Actuarial Society. The main role of the executive committee of the society was to rebrand the society and establish it as one of the popular academic societies. The major accomplishments during the year were:
  • Creating a new logo and defining the society.
  • Increasing membership (three times of the previous year)
  • Organise networking events and building strong bonds with School of Computing Sciences.
  • Participating in events and collaborating with Norwich Actuarial Society (particularly actuaries from Aviva)
Executive committee 2012/13 of UEA Actuarial Society at Aviva. I am third from right.
Today I am just a member of the society and feel proud for the strong foundations we built, although, credit goes to the current executive team and President for sustaining the society efficiently. Some of the soft skills I developed will be important tools for me throughout my life.
I strongly believe that societies are a great podium to meet people and enhance your university experience and University of East Anglia is probably the best in this aspect.
If you have any further questions I would welcome them at pakistanstudents@uea.ac.uk
