Back to reality

Christmas is over; vacations are over… now back to reality... But reality does not have to be so overwhelming. The best way to prepare for exams is to start preparing with time; so here are some tips for a day to day work that will improve our study techniques.

1. Keep in mind that the more we use and manipulate information, the more we will understand it; so take 30 minutes of your time every day to review your lecture notes.

2. Highlight major topics and subtopics; major topics often extend through more than one day’s lecture, and it is easy to lose track of the overall picture from day to day.

3. Don’t try to memorize your notes from the beginning to the end. It’s not the words which are important, it’s the ideas.

4. Use diagrams, charts and graphs. The more ways you can manipulate and experience the material you are trying to learn, the more secure your understanding and memory will be.

5. Use flash cards for those definitions you must memorize.

6. Prepare a self test, challenge yourself with difficult questions, if you can answer them well, you will be ready for the real exam.

7. Never, ever pull an “All-Nighter” on the night before the exam. What you may gain for extra study, won’t compensate for the lack of alertness and ability to concentrate due to the lack of sleep.

8. Make a list of ideas that you want to keep fresh in the exam, revise them the night before and even in the morning of the exam, but keep them away just after revising, otherwise trying to revise just before the exam only increases desperation which leads to panic and finally anxiety during the exam.

9. And finally, get a good night’s sleep the night before the exam.
